His proposal is to replace the existing boiler with an oil-fired Weil McLain steam boiler model SBL480 (which he says is the same boiler as the one we've got now). Another installer has strongly cautioned against 'downsizing' because it is a steam system and he said you have to be very careful not to change the measurements and the relative distances between components or the pipe sizes which are all geared to the square footage of the house and the existing radiators. One installer recommended a Peerless ECT-06 oil-fired steam boiler and said it is smaller (which is good for getting it in the tight basement - the old one needs to be taken out in pieces.) and said it is also more efficient and will produce more output than the original one without burning more oil (although present one's input is set at 2.0 gph and the Peerless has input of 2.75-3.0 gph - WHATEVER that means). Presently we have an oil-fired steam Weil McLain BL476WS in our 100 year old 4200 sq ft home.
